Project

Girls Learn, Succeed and Lead

Project completed implementation in January 2022

This project aimed to support 7,010 marginalised girls to improve their learning, and encourage their transition to secondary school.

The project took a community-based approach to improving girls’ education and introduced strategies in five additional regions in Tanzania, including peri-urban areas. An individualised tracking system meant that the project could follow each girl from the start of the project through secondary school and beyond, tracking her progression, attendance and learning, and ensuring responsiveness in the support she received.

Activities
  • Learner Guide programme where Learner Guides (local young women who are recent school graduates) provided learning support for girls in secondary school and reached out to out-of-school girls to provide them with mentoring and role models, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health
  • Low-cost, self-study guides, such as Learning to Learn in English, to improve literacy and reduce drop out caused by the transition to English as a language of instruction at secondary level in Tanzania
  • Whole-class literacy initiatives, including essay competitions and debates
  • A needs-based financing mechanism to address the significant cost barriers to girls' ability to continue attending school
  • A life skills curriculum (My Better World) delivered by Learner Guides to improve self-confidence, rights awareness and resilience
  • Teacher mentors trained to monitor girls' welfare to reinforce girls' safety and wellbeing, reducing their likelihood of dropping out
  • ‘CAMA’, an alumnae network of young female school graduates who provided girls who complete school with the support to facilitate their successful transition from secondary school, raising the status of marginalised women in their communities.
